Abstract

Dr. Tarun Das’s working paper presents an Operational Multiregional Multisectoral Transport Model for India, designed to optimize transport planning by integrating socioeconomic and macroeconomic frameworks. The model estimates optimal transport volumes, locations, and mode choices for rail, road, coastal shipping, and air, aligning with national economic goals. Structured into twelve stages—from macroeconomic modeling and regional allocation to traffic distribution, modal split, and network assignment—it employs calibration techniques such as gravity and linear programming models. Leveraging extensive regional, demographic, and commodity flow data, the model supports infrastructure investment planning and policy formulation, emphasizing efficiency, regional equity, and adaptability to India’s evolving transport and economic landscape.
