Abstract

Although the year under review witnessed significant advances towards the realization or the tasks, targets and objectives laid down in the plan, certain disquieting developments in the economy overshadowed both the achievements and success of the development efforts directed towards raising levels of living of the people and to open to them opportunities for richer and more varied life. But for these disquieting developments, the achievements would have been much more spectacular and gains in agricultural and industrial production much more substantial than in the past. The most disquieting development in the economy which affected both the resource-position of the state as also the intrinsic success of the development effort was the precipitous fall in agricultural production consequent to the widespread drought and unfavorable weather conditions in large parts of the state during 1957-58 and slowing down of industrial production as a result of serious shortages of raw materials and components and smaller additions to plant and mechanic owing to import restrictions.
