Abstract

The Third Plan review for 1961-62 evaluates India’s economic progress across key sectors, including industry, transport, power, agriculture, and education. Total plan outlays increased from Rs. 1071 crores to Rs. 1148 crores, with significant allocations for social services. Industrial production grew by 5%, while infrastructure development advanced through expanded railways, roads, and bridges. Power generation rose but remained insufficient for demand. Agricultural outputs showed resilience despite adverse weather, and irrigation coverage expanded. Education witnessed higher enrollments and enhanced technical training, complemented by scholarships for disadvantaged groups. Employment initiatives generated 2 million new jobs, with rural employment programs targeting local manpower utilization. The review underscores both achievements and challenges, emphasizing the need for continued strategic planning to ensure sustainable growth and sectoral coordination in the coming years.
