Abstract

This lecture, Agriculture in Post Independence India: Looking Back and Looking Ahead, reviews the evolution of Indian agriculture since Independence and examines the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Ramesh Chand analyzes the growth trajectory of agriculture over several decades, highlighting the contributions of technological advancements, policy interventions, irrigation expansion, and market developments to agricultural transformation in India. The presentation discusses changes in crop production, livestock, fisheries, agricultural employment, farmer incomes, food and nutrition security, and the sector's performance in a global context. It emphasizes the increasing importance of livestock, horticulture, and fisheries as drivers of agricultural growth, while noting the relatively slow growth of traditional field crops despite substantial policy support. The lecture also addresses emerging concerns related to sustainability, climate change, declining farm size, resource degradation, nutrition security, and global competitiveness. Looking ahead, it advocates for diversification, agro-climatic planning, technological innovation, food processing, farmer producer organizations, and demand-driven agricultural development to achieve sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth. The presentation concludes with recommendations for research, policy reform, and institutional innovation to strengthen Indian agriculture in the twenty-first century.
